Biala Box Hill began in 1977 as an initiative of Alma Hexter. As a volunteer at the Royal Children’s Hospital, she recognised that many families and children with disabilities were not attending any local community based programs.
She began a group for these families in 1977 in a Box Hill church hall with volunteer staff. Later that year this group moved to a venue in Kangerong Road, Box Hill. A Committee of Management was established in 1978.
Arising from this inspiration, three other Biala programs were set up in Melbourne namely Peninsula (1979), Ringwood (1981) and Cranbourne (1987). Each service runs as an autonomous body that responds to the specific needs of their local communities.
In 1985 Biala was re-located to its current site. For many years, Biala’s work involved the provision of centre-based early intervention and respite care supports to families and their children.
Today, Biala’s service model continues to evolve in response to the ever changing needs of families and the community. At its core, Biala upholds a strong commitment to work collaboratively with parents and carers in order to enhance the capacity and inclusion of children in all aspects of their everyday lives.
To enhance the quality of life for children from birth to 6 years with additional needs and their family through the provision of holistic and capacity building services that are responsive to changing needs.
Our core objectives are to:
- work in partnership with parents and carers to assist them to plan for and to access the information, skills and supports needed
- build on the existing skills and strengths of children, families and their carers to optimize learning and development in everyday settings
- promote and sustain inclusive learning opportunities for all children with additional needs
Biala Box Hill staff work as part of a Transdisciplinary team which includes a range of early intervention professionals (e.g. speech pathologist, occupational therapist, specialist teacher and psychologist).
Biala Box Hill has a long history of local community support including the work of trained volunteers within our program. Currently volunteers work in some of Biala’s centre based and community support programs. Our volunteers receive formal training with ongoing supervision and guidance from the specialist staff.
